For some of the authors who play instruments on the site, maybe you could include sheet music/tab section. I know I would appreciate some songs for the piano. It could probably work well with the midi section, since it's possible to extract the notes from midis.

Just thought of another idea as I listened to the -collab?- between you and Lady Arsenic.
Collab songs that show up on multiple peoples' accounts would work out pretty cool. I have at least 5 people who I occasionally do collabs with, but if one of us submitted it, it would leave out credit for the other without a long, detailed explanation.
Maybe the submit page would be saved to the site, and notification sent to the other authors listed. Then they could edit the description, title, etc. and send it back to the other authors. Once all authors click finalize, it is submitted.
Fucking playlists. Seriously, being allowed to create your own playlist of your favourite audio portal songs would be awesome.

Artists, songs search features etc.
I'd be willing to download a constantly updated library from NG right to my comp so for a easy quick search, and than just stream the songs I select as I go :P
Just an idea, fake it to WMP to think I have the entire NG audio database on my comp, but only the library and stream it as it oes >:P
I have no idea if any of this is possible, due to the fact that I admit I know jack shit about programming.

The best advice I can give you is actually to be self-absorbed in the design to an extent. You are a music composer and so if you make the site a tool for yourself to use rather then trying to bend it as a tool for others, it will end up being smoother with more of the features that are important.
Another Idea is to allow artists their own flashy mp3 player. This can be effectively done by just releasing the source for your mp3 player then letting them custom skin it, code in whatever computeSpectrum effects they want (or force a programmign buddy to do it for them =P)
Last thing I'd love is a player that just keeps playing and pulling. I often keep your guy's music playing in the background, set it and forget it. I want to be able to do that without having a loop every 3 or so minutes. Thus, I think you should allow artists to create playlists. Heck, not even of just their own music either. Think of the epicness that could be achieved in a playlist that included the best of you, milkman and winter. Or a mellow playlist from SBB, all within the browser in 1 click.
Okay, I lied about last.. your site is going to have even more dismal traffic then the audio portal at first. You need a more robust voting system to be sure =O (if score is going to be a ranking option)

this would take a lot of bandwitdh, but it would be really cool if there was an art page, where people could submit drawings inspired by the songs.
another thing is maybe a chat box, but one with many moderators so that the discussion would stay on connection with the songs, or creating of your own. it would increase the feeling of community.
nice ideas, just for #1, have a variety of listeners to choose. the best of the best is very subjective, you know. split into genre-specific, mood-specific categories?
#5 is REALLY good idea. i was lost for 2 years figuring out reason on my own [which may have been a blessing for now, but still. 2 years?].
playlists? that would be nice as part of the popup player.
customizable subgenres - you have a preliminary overall genre for classification, and a subgenre to deal with any niches that are uncovered by the overall genres for organizational purposes. that way, less people saying you suck for misclassification.
ways to gain exposure. i dont have any specifics, but thats something to think about.
and i still think a NG facebook app would be awesome :)
